Inside the Creation of the le PÈRE Layering Fragrances
For decades, the French perfumer Blaise Mautin—often referred to in industry circles as “the Nose of Paris”—has quietly shaped some of the most refined scent environments in the world. His work appears everywhere from private collections for royalty to bespoke compositions for the most legendary institutions in France.
To Mautin, fragrance has never been simply about a pleasant aroma. It is about composition. Emotion. Memory. And most importantly, identity.
“We are layered beings,” he explains. “One perfume was never enough for me—life isn’t made that way. I layer different scents to create different experiences. These perfumes are my stories. When you layer them, they become yours.”
That philosophy became the foundation for the newest le PÈRE collection.

A New Way to Experience Fragrance
When the studio began developing this collection, the goal was not to create a single, definitive signature. Instead, we approached fragrance as an essential expression of inner life.
Just as a composer might layer melody, rhythm, and tone to express a complex feeling, scent can be arranged to build depth and nuance. Instead of producing one finished object, the collaboration between le PÈRE and Mautin resulted in a system of scents designed to interact with one another.
Four fragrances. Four distinct energies. Endless combinations.
The result is the Layering Fragrances collection. Each scent can stand alone with confidence, but when layered together, they create entirely new emotional coordinates—allowing you to customize your presence according to mood, environment, or a specific unhurried moment.
The Craft of the Perfumer
For Mautin, layering is not a novelty. It is the essence of perfumery itself. Every fragrance he creates is already a layered composition—multiple raw materials arranged with the precision of a musical score.
Florals lift. Woods ground. Citrus brightens. Resins deepen.
In traditional perfumery, the perfumer makes these decisions in advance for the wearer. The final scent is presented as a fixed reality. But with the Layering Fragrances, Mautin chose to reverse the process. Instead of dictating the final outcome, he built four fragrances designed to interact naturally with one another—inviting the wearer to become the composer.
“Layering different ingredients to create different experiences is the essence of what I do,” Mautin explains. “Combining them is a natural gesture—it simply puts the narrative in the hands of the person carrying it.”
Four Fragrances, Four Energies
The collection introduces four distinct scents, each designed with a specific role within the layering ritual:
Jean Vetiver | Structure • Calm • Longevity: Grounded and elegant, Jean Vetiver balances earthy vetiver with the brightness of bergamot clarity. The result is structured and calm—a precise architectural line that brings order to everything around it.
Oui Monsieur | Freshness • Intimacy • Sensuality: Bright, playful, and slightly flirtatious, Oui Monsieur blends citrus, florals, and soft almond. It introduces a whisper of light—the type of scent that draws people in rather than announcing itself loudly.
1ER (Premier) | Depth • Warmth • Identity: The foundation of the collection, built around patchouli, white musk, and sandalwood. Deep and quietly confident, it feels less like something applied and more like something that has always belonged to the skin.
Afters | Memory • Mystery • Trace: Warm woods, iris, and spice unfold gradually. Afters is less about the first impression and more about what lingers—the memory of a presence that refuses to disappear.
A New Ritual
At le PÈRE, layering is not meant to feel like a formula. It is an instinctive ritual.
Some days you wear one fragrance to ground yourself. Other days you combine two to create tension. Sometimes the result feels quiet and personal; other times it becomes something bold and expressive. In the end, Mautin believes that is what fragrance was always meant to do: to serve as a wearable story for the sensitive soul.
